BUILDING BETTER BOARDS
Powerful Partnership: Skills and Tools for Effective Head/Board Collaboration
with Julie Faulstich, Principal of Stony Creek Strategy and Moira Kelly, President of EXPLO
Wednesday, October 23, 2024 3:00-4:30 PM PT 4:00-5:30 PM MT
Session Description
While boards and heads intellectually understand the concept of “lanes”—operations (the head) and fiduciary, strategic and generative (the board)—under strain from the many novel challenges schools face, these lanes can blur. In day to day practice, trustees are often genuinely unclear on their roles, especially when they are also current parents or alumni volunteers. Sometimes this manifests in taking up valuable head and staff time, getting too far into the weeds of operations. But when no productive outlet for trustee concerns or questions is provided, including access to meaningful, clear data, trustee frustrations can boil over, often with disruptive consequences for the school or trustees leaving the board. To truly lead a school forward, heads and boards need to go beyond “boundary reinforcing” governance training to learn skills and practices supporting a cooperative, trusting partnership with joint responsibility for the success of the school in their separate but interdependent roles. Series Overview
In this series of workshops, attendees will explore the role of trustee, and provide a space for board members to learn from national thought leaders, experienced board chairs, heads of school and association leadership.
Offered throughout the year, each workshop has a theme for board improvement and actionable steps to move your school forward. Previously this workshop was recommended for those new to the role, but feedback was that it was universally valuable. All independent school board members are encouraged to attend.
