BUILDING BETTER BOARDS

Independent School Philanthropy Reimagined:
Bold Strategies for Trustees

with Romayne Levee, Partner & Director of Strategy at Mission Minded

Wednesday, April 23, 2025

3:00-4:30 PM PT
4:00-5:30 PM MT

Session Description

Independent schools striving to meet ambitious fundraising targets often fall short due to inadequate trustee training or outdated philanthropic approaches. In this session, trustees will undergo a transformative journey in rethinking philanthropy and leveraging successful practices from our higher-education colleagues. The focus shifts from traditional demographic-based donor analysis to understanding donors' values, motivations, and aspirations. By adopting this nuanced perspective, trustees can craft more resonant appeals and acknowledgments that forge meaningful connections with donors. Moreover, the session delves into the pitfalls of outdated fundraising practices that inadvertently reinforce donor saviorism. Trustees will gain valuable insights into equitable fundraising strategies that align with evolving philanthropic norms and set their school up for success.

Meet Our Facilitator

Romayne Levee, Partner & Director of Strategy at Mission Minded

Romayne Levee isn’t afraid to think big, and she guides our team of strategists to do the same.

Romayne is in her element when she’s guiding school boards and educational leaders to dream big about the impact of their work—on their students, communities, and the field of education. Her influence as one of the industry’s most sought-after educational strategists and lecturers is felt from coast to coast in the ways schools adopt audacious strategic plans and lean into distinctive communication strategies to achieve strategic mission alignment and grow resources.

She has developed dynamic strategic plans and brand strategies for Mission Minded clients from coast to coast, including San Francisco Day School, Friends School of Baltimore, and Marlborough School (LA).

Romayne’s volunteer service greatly informs her work. She is the founding Board Chair of Vistamar School, an independent high school in LA, and currently serves on the Board of Lewis & Clark College. Before Mission Minded, she was a Partner at advertising agencies BBDO and Chiat Day.

Series Overview

In this series of workshops, attendees will explore the role of trustee, and provide a space for board members to learn from national thought leaders, experienced board chairs, heads of school and association leadership.

Offered throughout the year, each workshop has a theme for board improvement and actionable steps to move your school forward. Previously this workshop was recommended for those new to the role, but feedback was that it was universally valuable. All independent school board members are encouraged to attend.
