Children at The McGillis School participate in an academic curriculum designed to make their education relevant to the world in which they live. Classes are organized both in terms of subject specialization and integrated thematic units, emphasizing teaching subject matter skills in ways that help students learn how to apply those skills in different situations. Students at The McGillis School are taught to solve problems creatively, apply critical thinking, collaborate with others, and communicate effectively.

The McGillis School also emphasizes the application of classroom skills and the development of social responsibility and active citizenship through modeling and active participation in a highly-regarded service learning program.

The McGillis School is a non-religious school, but the school culture and curriculum is infused with Jewish values we consider to be universal such as a respect for education, tikum olam or repairing the world, tzedakah or giving to others less fortunate, gemilut hasadim or doing good and kind deeds, and derech eretz or having respect for all. The school stresses the universality of these values and the importance of building understanding and acceptance between individuals so that all can work together as responsible, caring individuals. Children from all religions and races are welcome and are encouraged to enroll in the school.
