Audience

K-8 educators and educational leaders will find this course valuable and applicable.

Course Overview Description

  • Do you have students who are disorganized and may not have the materials they need or even turn in the homework they have completed? Is their desk space, locker or backpack a ‘black hole’ for papers and materials?

  • Do you see students who struggle to initiate complex academic assignments, procrastinate and then run out of time to do their ‘best work' or tasks/assignment take twice as long as they should? Do you wish your student had a sense of task urgency?

  • Does it seem that they have an inability to breakdown the demands of an assignment and have a sense of how to start? Are they prompt dependent? Are you constantly reminding them of the materials they need and the steps to take?

In this practical strategies seminar you will learn concrete tools to help students manage their attention, time, and materials to initiate the steps towards completing and closing out assignments. Throughout the four sessions, participants will learn structures to teach students to help them keep pace, make timely transitions and follow routines. Sarah Ward will share proven structures to help with the initiation of more open ended and complex assignments. Attendees will walk away with dozens of tools to support students in developing independent executive function skills to self-regulate and manage impulses.

After the Completion of the Workshops Series, Participants Will Be Able To:

  • State the functional working definition of  what is meant by the phrase “executive function skills" as it pertains to classroom and therapeutic interventions
  • Describe Executive Dysfunction and identify the typical developmental course of executive function skills.

  • Define how situational awareness, self talk, forethought, gesture/movement and episodic memory are the foundational skills for successful task execution

  • Develop an intervention program to foster a student’s ability to form more independent executive function skills by describing practical, easy to implement activities to improve
